Cable Ties

Cables ties are a type of fastener, typically used to hold cables together in a group and to reduce tangles in multiple wires and cables. They are usually made from a strong nylon material with an anti-release mechanism design, which is beneficial because when the tail end of the cable tie is entered in the head, forming a loop, it is not able to be pulled back out. The length of the cable tie has little directional grooves embedded in the tie. These grooves act as a ratchet once passed through the head, creating the anti-release behavior.

How to Tie Cables Together

Cable ties can be cinched down to the desired level and will not come loose. Once the tail end is entered it cannot be removed, it can only be tightened further, so it is important to not over tighten the cable tie. The nylon material will often break before the gears compromise and fail.

Cable ties have been used and proven quite effective in the use of wire harnesses and generally where multiple wires and cable are brought in together. Cable ties have proven their usefulness for years and have been applied to multiple applications, beyond tying cables or wires together. Metal and Velcro cable ties are common but less effective than their nylon counterparts.
