The functionality of light serves to address the rudimentary need to see the world about us. However, by applying different lighting for different scenarios, light can also serve as a form of aesthetics.
For interior residential spaces, lighting solutions are geared towards creating an ambient setting with sufficient task lighting and ample general lighting. For example, the use of diffuse incandescent lights helps to create a subtle, comfortable setting. Lensed fluorescent luminaires provide consistent lighting for function rooms.
The interiors of Retail spaces would, on the other hand, would require stronger lighting for brand image and entice phototropic customers. Warm light diminished general lighting, and high concentration accent lighting are applied to entice people to shop longer whereas strong uniform lighting via cool color temperature lamps (e.g. LEDs) give people the impression of good deals. Track lighting is also applied to douse merchandise with light and in turn attention.
Office interiors would have to account for factors such as computer usage. Lighting solutions are dictated by visual comfort, specular surfaces, veiling reflection and visual tasks.
